Fane

An immortal survivor seeking the truth behind his forgotten kin after eons in captivity.

Fane is the last surviving member of an immortal species, appearing as a male undead figure who spent aeons imprisoned. He was a noble from Rivellon before his long confinement. Unlike typical mindless undead, Fane retains full intelligence and memory, driven by a singular goal: to discover what happened to the rest of his kind. As one of six pre-made characters available at the start of Divinity: Original Sin II (2017), he can be recruited as a fully playable companion or played as the main protagonist.

Lore & Background

Fane belongs to an ancient, long-forgotten species of immortals who once inhabited Rivellon. He is described as the last member of this group, having spent aeons imprisoned before his release. His backstory involves a deep mystery regarding the fate of his people; he seeks answers about what became of them after their disappearance. While other playable races include Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and Lizards (both living and undead), Fane represents a unique lineage tied to the original inhabitants of Rivellon. His existence is marked by isolation and a quest for historical truth, distinguishing him from companions like Beast or Sebille who have more immediate personal vendettas.

In Their Own Story

Fane begins as one of six pre-made characters available to players at the start of Divinity: Original Sin II. If chosen as a companion, he is encountered on the first island, Fort Joy, where only the six origin stories are available for recruitment. As a fully playable character, Fane reacts to the player's choices and actions throughout the game, potentially growing to like or dislike them based on their decisions. His unique dialogue options reflect his ancient origins and knowledge of Rivellon's history, offering interactions unavailable to custom characters. If selected as the main Godwoken, Fane's origin story provides specific narrative branches involving his search for his lost people. In combat, he utilizes the turn-based tactical system, leveraging environmental elements like water or fire alongside his magic.

Reader's Guide

Fane is available as a pre-made character at the start of Divinity: Original Sin II (2017) or can be recruited on Fort Joy if not chosen initially. He functions as a fully playable companion within a party of up to four Godwoken, whether in single-player or cooperative multiplayer modes with two to four players. As an undead character, he offers unique dialogue options that influence NPC behavior and reveal lore about Rivellon's ancient history. His combat role benefits from the game's action-point system, allowing multiple actions per turn using skills from up to ten different families. Players can mix and craft skills to suit his capabilities. In multiplayer, Fane can be controlled by a separate player or the same player controlling other party members.
