Godwoken

Persecuted user of Source magic destined to fight the Voidwoken in Rivellon.

The Godwoken is a persecuted user of Source magic in Divinity: Original Sin II, a 2017 role-playing game by Larian Studios. Set in the medieval fantasy world of Rivellon, this protagonist becomes pivotal in fighting the Voidwoken, monstrous creatures wreaking havoc across the land. Originally released for Windows in September 2017 as the fifth main entry in the Divinity series, the game casts players as a Sourcerer captured and transported to Fort Joy. There, a mysterious force saves them from drowning after their ship is sunk by a gigantic Kraken Voidwoken. After rescue, Dallis identifies them as a Sourcerer, but it is in the Hall of Echoes that the Gods designate them as 'Godwoken.' This title marks the beginning of a journey where they must confront Bishop Alexandar, escape Fort Joy to reach Reaper's Coast, and decide whether to ascend to Divinity to hold back the Void or succumb to its drain on the Seven.

Lore & Background

In Rivellon, Sourcerers are feared and reviled because their use of Source attracts the Voidwoken. The Divine Order, led by Bishop Alexandar (Lucian's son who claims to be the new Divine) and his advisor Dallis, captures these individuals via the Magisters faction. The player character, a Sourcerer, is sent to Fort Joy on an island previously inhabited by Braccus Rex, the late Sourcerer King. After escaping the prison-town, the Godwoken meets the Seekers, a resistance group opposing the Divine Order who seek to help Sourcerers. In the Hall of Echoes, one of the Seven gods reveals that the Veil separating Rivellon and the Void is weakening, allowing Voidwoken to enter and drain the gods' Source. The God urges the Godwoken to fulfill their potential, ascend to Divinity, and hold back the Void before it kills the Seven. This narrative also uncovers that the Seven are actually Eternals who betrayed their species by banishing them to the Void and posing as deities.

In Their Own Story

The story begins on the ship Merryweather, where the player character is captured by the Divine Order. A gigantic Kraken Voidwoken attacks and sinks the vessel, but a mysterious force saves the Sourcerer from drowning, calling them 'Godwoken.' On Fort Joy, they witness the Magisters' brutal regime under Alexandar and Dallis, who purge prisoners of their Source to create mindless husks for fighting. Escaping with help from the Seekers and half-demon Malady, the Godwoken defeats Alexandar and steals his sentient ship, the Lady Vengeance. After a narrow escape from Dallis and Vredeman, where most Seekers perish, the party sails to Reaper's Coast to unlock Source powers. Directed by their God to the Well of Ascension, they learn Dallis has excavated the Aeteran, an artifact capable of purging all Source from Rivellon. Here, they meet Aeterna, who reveals the Seven were Eternals that betrayed their kind, creating mortal races and posing as gods.

Reader's Guide

Players control a Godwoken in turn-based tactical RPG combat from an isometric perspective, with action points governing each turn. The game supports single-player or cooperative multiplayer for up to four players, either controlling one character alone (with up to three NPC companions) or dividing the party among group members. Six pre-made origin characters—Beast, Fane, Ifan ben-Mezd, Lohse, the Red Prince, and Sebille—are available alongside custom creation options for race (Human, Elf, Dwarf, Lizard), gender, and background. Each origin offers unique dialogue and sidequests. Combat leverages environmental elements like water, ice, oil, and fire, plus high ground advantages. Characters utilize physical and magic armor to negate damage and status effects; once destroyed, they become vulnerable to direct health damage. A flexible skill system allows mixing ten different families of skills. Dialogue trees offer multiple solutions with world-impacting consequences, where killing certain NPCs can render quests incompletable.
