Lore & Background
The Source Hunters are defined by their mission to hunt down those who wield Source magic. Their adventure starts in Cyseal after receiving orders regarding a town councilor's murder by a suspected Sourcerer. Upon arrival, they find the city under siege by orcs and undead, orchestrated by a Sourcerer conspiracy linked to the Immaculates cult in the Luculla Forest. They uncover evidence implicating the White Witch, Icara, who reveals her sister Leandra—the Conduit—is behind the plot. The Hunters learn of 'Death Knights,' powerful undead warriors created by Leandra using Source magic and souls to conquer Rivellon. Throughout their quest, they recover magical 'Star Stones' (some transformed into blood stones) which grant access to the Homestead, a fortress outside spacetime. These stones reveal that the Hunters are reincarnations of two ancient generals who once imprisoned the Void Dragon in the Astral Plane. They discover Leandra is being manipulated by a demonic being named the Scourge (also known as the Demon of the Void) to unleash the Void Dragon, prompting the Hunters to choose between restoring the soulforge between the sisters or killing Leandra.
In Their Own Story
The narrative centers on the customizable pair of heroes as they navigate from Cyseal to Hiberheim and beyond. After finding Icara trapped in ice by the Conduit, she pleads guilty to accidentally killing the councilor but exposes a larger plot involving mass murder and human sacrifice by the Immaculates. The Source Hunters ally with her, infiltrating the Luculla Mines where they encounter Death Knights and escape Leandra's destruction of the facility. Following clues left by Zandalor in Hunter's Edge, they enter an ancient Source Temple and proceed to the First Garden via the Homestead. There, they confront Leandra; if they have unearthed a means to restore her soulforge in the Phantom Forest, she repents and leaves with Icara and Zandalor. Otherwise, they must fight and kill her. In the final confrontation at the God Box, the Source Hunters join forces with Astarte to battle the Trife and the Void Dragon itself. They successfully banish the dragon back into the box, while Astarte remains to guard it eternally.
Reader's Guide
Players can experience the game as a single protagonist controlling both heroes or split control in two-player co-op. The journey begins with investigating the murder of a councilor in Cyseal, leading to the discovery of an orc and undead siege. Key turning points include freeing Icara from Hiberheim, discovering the tenebrium mining operation in Luculla Mines, and escaping Leandra's attempt to kill them with a fail-safe that renders Death Knights vulnerable. Players must collect Star Stones to access the Homestead and learn their true nature as reincarnated guardians of the God Box. The climax involves reaching the First Garden; success depends on whether players found the soulforge restoration item in the Phantom Forest earlier, which determines if Leandra is redeemed or defeated. Finally, the team must defeat the Trife and banish the Void Dragon to complete their mission.
